After earning a point in Colorado, the Columbus Crew returns to Lower.com Field for Military Appreciation Night pres. by AEP on Sunday night when the Black & Gold host Atlanta United FC.
Three Things to Know
10 – Including Saturday night against Atlanta, the Crew has 10 games remaining in the 2022 regular season. Currently, the team ranks fifth in the Eastern Conference with 34 points. There’s a four-point gap with the New York Red Bulls to enter the top four – which would guarantee at least one home game in the playoffs. But there’s also only a four-point gap with Toronto FC, which sits 11th in the conference. Basically, there’s a bit of a logjam in the middle of the conference, and the Crew is currently on the right side of it. Considering Atlanta is 13th in the conference, Sunday is an important match to earn a positive result in if the Black & Gold to maintain their playoff spot.
11 – Now removed from the late collapse against CF Montréal, the Crew is unbeaten in 11 of its last 12 games – a remarkable stat. That momentum has carried the Club up the Eastern Conference standings. That’s exactly what head coach Caleb Porter wants at this point in the season. Now, the Columbus hopes it can continue this run of form against the opponent that started the unbeaten run: Atlanta. A 2-1 road win on May 28 was the catalyst for the Crew’s hot streak.
3 – The Atlanta players will only have three nights rest between Wednesday night’s midweek match and the game on Sunday at Lower.com Field. With the full week off to recover and prepare, that strongly favors Columbus. On Wednesday night, the Five Stripes lost to the New York Red Bulls, 2-1.
When They Last Met
As stated earlier, a 2-1 win for the Crew at Mercedes-Benz Stadium started the Club’s nine-game unbeaten run – which was the league’s longest unbeaten streak at the time. When the clubs last played in Columbus, the visitors won, 3-2.
