Numbers to Know
2 – Two is important for two reasons. First, Columbus has two matches remaining in the regular season, which concludes on Oct. 19 – Decision Day at the New York Red Bulls. The second two is that the Crew are a confirmed second in the Eastern Conference standings. No matter what happens Saturday against New England, the Black & Gold will maintain the No. 2 seed entering the 2024 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. As the No. 2 seed, the Crew will play the No. 7, either the Red Bulls or Charlotte FC. Yes, it’s time for scoreboard-watching again.
60 – With last week’s win over the Philadelphia Union, the Black & Gold set a club single-season record with 60 points in a season. The Crew amassed 57 points in 2023 and 2008, but 2024 is the first time they’ve crossed that plateau. This is hardly a surprise to supporters, of course, who’ve seen the defending champions dominate opponents this season. While the Crew are at home again on Saturday night, where they’re 9-3-4 this season, it’s worth highlighting how impressive the side has been on the road, registering an 8-3-5 record. With two games left, Columbus can earn a maximum of 66 points – which would shatter the previous record by nine points.
14 – The Revolution enters the match 14th in the Eastern Conference standings and is already eliminated from postseason contention. New England has 31 points from 32 games and has struggled on the road with a 4-11-0 record. This will be former Crew MLS Cup-winning coach Caleb Porter’s first trip to Lower.com Field as an opposing manager, and it’ll be intriguing to see how he approaches the match. Because New England is eliminated – and the Crew have secured the second seed – will the match be free-flowing and open with plenty of risks?
When They Last Met
Who could forget that 5-1 thrashing at Gillette Stadium on June 29. The Crew conceded a goal to former Columbus player Emmanuel Boateng after nine minutes before five-unanswered goals via Cucho Hernández, Max Arfsten, Diego Rossi, Rudy Camacho and Steven Moreira. The sides split the points at the last meeting at Lower.com Field on April 15, 2023. Fun fact: New England was the first opponent at Lower.com Field in 2021.
