Following last Saturday’s match being postponed due to inclement weather in Charlotte, the Columbus Crew returns to the pitch on Wednesday night when it hosts CF Montreal at Lower.com Field.
Three Things to Know
3 – Had the Crew played the full match at Charlotte FC this past Saturday, Wednesday night would be the club’s second match in an eight-day span. But with that game abandoned after 16 minutes, the Black & Gold basically enter the midweek clash 10 days removed from their scoreless draw against the New England Revolution. Because Montreal played this past weekend, Columbus enters the match with more recovery time. That shouldn’t be overlooked considering the Crew sits sixth in the Eastern Conference, while Montreal is third.
9 – The Crew remains unbeaten in its last nine matches, although we all would’ve liked the streak to be at 10 assuming the match at Charlotte FC would’ve been played. Without a loss since late May, the Crew hopes to extend its streak to double digits against a Montreal team that’s unbeaten in three matches, but it lost the two previous games before those. Don’t forget Juan “Cucho” Hernandez enters this match with four goals from his last four games, while the team has jumped from ninth to sixth since the Colombian’s arrival in Columbus.
94 – Well, it doesn’t look like the Crew will have to worry about rain on Wednesday night, but this could be the hottest match of 2022 – so far. With an expected high of 94 degrees Wednesday, the temperature might be around 90 degrees at kickoff. The heat shouldn’t be an overlooked factor – especially if the Crew has a longer recovery time entering this match than Montreal.
When They Last Met
The Crew beat Montreal when the sides last met at Lower.com Field on Sept. 25, 2021. Then, a brace from Gyasi Zardes was enough for Columbus to claim three points in a 2-1 win against Montreal. (The visitors scored a consolation goal in stoppage time.) Four days after that match, the Crew won the Campeones Cup against Liga MX side Deportivo de Cruz Azul, 2-0.
