By The Numbers

By The Numbers pres. by Ohio Business Machines | Crew face D.C. United at Audi Field

Roughly a month since their first meeting – on a very, merry Crewsmas – the Columbus Crew and D.C. United will square off once again Saturday night when they clash in the nation’s capital.

Three Things to Know

15 – A lot has happened in the last month. We’ve seen head coach Wilfried Nancy’s first home match – and win – and we’ve seen the Crew transform into one of the league’s hottest teams. Columbus has won two-straight games for the first time since 2021, and the 15 goals scored through six matches is tied with St. Louis CITY SC for the most in MLS. In the last two matches, the Black & Gold have outscored teams, 10-1, following a 6-1 win over Atlanta United FC and a 4-0 pummeling against Real Salt Lake.

8 – Simply put: Aidan Morris has that dawg in him. The 21-year-old midfielder had scored three goals in the last two games and has looked like he’s played alongside Darlington Nagbe for a decade. The Homegrown has started every match and has an assist to his name, in addition to his three goals. His 92.8% passing accuracy leads the league for anyone who’s played at least five matches, and his 18 tackles lead the league, too. “I think it’s just challenging,” Morris said of his performances under Nancy. “Coach does such a good job of challenging and pushing me every single game, and giving me tests to kind of approach and take on, so I’m loving every second of it, so on to the next."

13 – D.C. United enters Saturday night sitting 13th in the Eastern Conference standings. Beginning with Crewsmas in early March, D.C. is winless in its last four matches – but has scored in every match this season other than the meeting the Ohio capital. Now, they meet in the national’s capital, as Christian Benteke leads a United attack hoping to win its first match since the 2023 season opener.

When They Last Met

Columbus beat D.C. United, 2-0, in the Crew’s home opener on Mar. 4 at Lower.com Field. That night, Lucas Zelarayán scored a brace thanks to two first-half finishes. When the clubs last played at Audi Field on July 13, 2022, the match ended, 2-2, after former Crew forward gave the home side the equalizer in the 92nd minute. Hopefully, this isn’t the last time Crew players play at Audi Field this season, as the 2023 MLS All Star Game presented by Target is played in the venue in July. At the rate the Crew is playing, don’t be surprised if some Black & Gold players team up with the league’s best against presumed English Premier League champions Arsenal FC.
