Winners of their last three, the Columbus Crew play a second home match in four days on Saturday night when they host Toronto FC in a Trillium Cup clash.
Numbers to Know
3 – As mentioned, Columbus has won three-straight games and seven-of-its-last-eight. That run of form has catapulted the club into third in the Eastern Conference standings with 36 points in 19 games. But more specifically, the side’s scored 11 goals in the last three games – 31% of the team’s total output in 2024. Don’t forget the Crew have allowed a league-fewest 18 goals this season.
With three games in hand behind first-place Inter Miami CF, the Columbus Crew are hitting their stride with four games remaining before Leagues Cup – and the Leagues Cup Showcase against English Premier League side Aston Villa FC at Lower.com Field.
10 – Go, Diego, go! With two goals in his last two games, Diego Rossi has been on a tear recently. In Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Nashville SC, the Uruguayan attacker scored his sixth goal in his last seven games and eighth across all competitions. Assuming he plays against TFC, the match will be his 30th league appearance since he joined the Crew last summer. Since then, he’s contributed nine goals and 11 assists.
8 – The Canadian club enters the Ohio capital on Saturday night with 24 points from 22 games – good enough to reside eighth in the conference – a play-in spot. The Reds, like the Crew, have a short turnaround following a 2-1 home loss to Orlando City SC on Wednesday night. While they’ve lost five-straight games in league action, they have a big night next Wednesday when they face Forge FC in leg one of the Canadian Championship. Toronto’s form is opposite of Columbus, so hopefully the Black & Gold can move to four-straight wins while the visitors continue to seek their first win since May 18 against CF Montréal.
10 – Crew supporters should keep an eye on No. 10 Federico Bernadeschi, who’s tallied eight goals and six assists through 19 league games this season. The Italian playmaker has either produced a goal or assist in four-of-the-last-five games, and he’s been in prolific from since he arrived in Toronto in 2022. Through 63 appearances, he has 21 goals and 13 assists. The 30-year-old was previously a regular for the Italian national team, so we all know of his quality. Let’s see how it matches up against the best backline in MLS.
