The Ohio State University Men’s Soccer Team took home the inaugural 2019 Columbus Crew SC Spring College League championship following a 3-2 win over Bowling Green State University at Fortress Obetz on April 14.
The league, which consisted of eight NCAA Division I teams from the Midwest region, kicked off on March 9 and was comprised of two groups, with each team playing three round-robin-style matches before being placed into the final match against its respective counterpart from the opposite group based on standings.
In addition to Ohio State’s victory as part of the first-place match, Cleveland State University topped Marshall University 2-1 (2nd-place match), North Kentucky University defeated Dayton University 4-0 (3rd-place match), and the University of Cincinnati defeated Purdue University-Fort Wayne 2-1 (4th-place match).
“The tournament was a good opportunity to bring some of the top collegiate talent right to our backyard,” said Technical Director Pat Onstad. “Each of the final four matches showcased the competitive spirit of our sport. I want to thank each team that took the time to participate in our inaugural Crew Spring College League championship, as well as the city of Obetz and the staff of Fortress Obetz for hosting the event. Congratulations to The Ohio State University on their Championship.”
Led by second-year head coach and former Crew player Brian Maisonneuve, the Buckeyes went a perfect 3-0 in the Black Group before capping things off with a 3-2 win on Sunday, led by two goals from Jack Holland, who was named the League’s Final Game MVP.
“The Crew Spring League was a great event,” Maisonneuve said. “To have a competition in the spring was good for our team development. It added a little more to our daily trainings and preparation. Thanks to Columbus Crew for all their work in putting it together.”
