George, Trinidad & Tobago secure Gold Cup group win

TRIvMEX Gold Cup

Columbus Crew SC midfielder Kevan George helped Trinidad & Tobago secure the top spot in Group C at the 2015 Gold Cup after a thrilling 4-4 draw over group favorite Mexico.

Trinidad & Tobago will take on Group A third-place finisher and 2013 Gold Cup Runner-up, Panama, in the quarterfinals at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET (FOX Sports 1/Univision/UDN).

In last night’s match against tournament co-favorite Mexico, George played as a right defensive midfielder for the full 90 minutes. He has now logged the maximum of 270 minutes in the 2015 Gold Cup.

Last night’s goal-scoring fest can easily be considered one of the most exciting Gold Cup matches of all-time. Of the game’s eight goals, seven were scored in the second half, including the stoppage-time equalizer for Trinidad & Tobago, which helped the Soca Warriors secure a point and the top spot in Group C.

Finding themselves down one goal in stoppage time, Trinidad & Tobago held onto one more opportunity for an equalizer after earning a corner kick in the closing seconds. In what would be the last play of the game, T&T’s Joevin Jones, withstanding a barrage of plastic bottles from the fans, swung in a cross to teammate Yohance Marshall, who headed it past Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa for T&T’s fourth and final goal.

As Trinidad & Tobago get set for their quarterfinal match, the team will do so with history in its favor. The Soca Warriors are 6-3-1 all-time against Panama, scoring 16 goals while conceding just nine.
