1. D.C. United – 41 pts. | 6-4 win vs. Real Salt Lake; this week: at Montreal Impact
D.C. United is beginning to make a habit of late-game comebacks. After finding itself down 2-0 for the second straight match, United answered with six goals, including the final two of the match in the 79th and 85th minutes for its 12th win of the season. The 10 goals are the most-ever scored in a MLS game at RFK Stadium.
2. New York Red Bulls – 32 pts. | 3-1 win at Philadelphia Union; this week: at Montreal Impact, vs. NYCFC
For the first time this season, the Red Bulls got the better of the Philadelphia Union as new signee Shaun Wright-Phillips set up two goals and earned a penalty kick in the third meeting between the two sides this year. Sacha Klejstan, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Anatole Abang filled up the scoring sheet for the Red Bulls, who have now won three straight.
3. Columbus Crew SC – 31 pts. | 5-2 loss at Orlando City SC; this week: at Colorado Rapids
The Black & Gold came out with pace, scoring the match’s first goal on a nice finish by Federico Higuain in the fourth minute. But Orlando City took over from there, scoring five straight goals and handing Crew SC only its second loss in nine matches.
4. New England Revolution – 31 pts. | 3-1 win vs. Toronto FC; this week: BYE
Jermaine Jones made his first appearance since May 31, but the day belonged to Charlie Davies, who regained his goal-scoring form netting two against a Toronto team that played with 10 men for the better part of the match. After Davies knocked in his first goal in the 35th minute, things got chippy as Jozy Altidore was sent off four minutes later for a scuffle with Jose Goncalves. Lee Nguyen went on to extend the Revs’ lead on a penalty kick while Davies scored an insurance goal in the 62nd.
5. Toronto FC – 28 pts. | 3-1 loss at New England; this week: vs. Orlando City SC, vs. Sporting Kansas
After a straight red to Jozy Altidore and a half-time substitution for Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC looked deflated as the Revolution went on the gain a 3-0 lead. Toronto’s Jonathan Osorio provided a rare glimpse of light, blasting it near-post to get the visitors on the scoreboard in the 75th minute.
6. Montreal Impact – 27 pts. | 3-2 win at NYCFC; this week: vs. RBNY, vs. D.C. United
A goal from Dominic Oduro and a brace from Ignacio Piatti proved to be enough for a hard-fought Impact win over New York City FC, ruining Frank Lampard’s MLS debut in the process. Montreal went ahead quickly with Oduro scoring in the fifth minute, only to double down in the 32nd after a chip from Piatti found the back of the net. With the victory the Impact continue their climb up the table, winning three of their last four matches.
7. Orlando City SC – 27 pts. | 5-2 win vs. Columbus Crew SC; this week: at Toronto FC, vs. Philadelphia
After conceding an early goal, Orlando bounced back with five straight goals to snap a three-game losing streak. For Orlando, it was potential Rookie of the Year Cyle Larin coming through with a brace, while Darwin Ceren, Aurelien Collin and Christian Higuita all scored one apiece.
8. New York City FC – 24 pts. | 3-2 loss vs. Montreal Impact; this week: at Red Bulls New York
After going down 2-0 in the first half, David Villa cut the deficit in half with a 68th-minute penalty strike for the Spaniard’s 13th goal of the season. The applause opened up shortly thereafter as Frank Lampard made his long-awaited NYCFC debut, coming on for Andrew Jacobson in the 69th minute. NYCFC couldn’t keep the momentum going, however, after giving the Impact a penalty-shot goal to seal the game.
9. Chicago Fire – 22 pts. | 2-0 win vs. FC Dallas; this week: at Portland Timbers FC
It was Designated Player night at Toyota Park as goals from Chicago’s David Accam and Shaun Maloney gave Chicago its sixth victory of the year. With the win, Chicago moves past Philadelphia into ninth in the Eastern Conference, just five points back of the sixth-place Impact and a potential playoff position.
10. Philadelphia Union – 22 pts. | 3-1 loss vs. New York Red Bulls; this week: at Orlando City SC
Sebastien Le Toux scored the only goal for the Union, who now have lost three straight League matches. Despite new signee Tranquillo Barnetta making an appearance in the final 30 minutes, scoring opportunities were hard to come by as the Union managed to record only three shots on target.
