Three goals in 12 minutes. That was the story for the New York Red Bulls as they put away the New England Revolution for their seventh win of the season. 2014 Golden Boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the game’s first goal in the fourth minute and earned a brace just eight minutes later. With the win, the Red Bulls hopped into second place in the East.
3. Toronto FC – 24 pts. | 4-4 draw at New York City FC; this week: vs. Philadelphia Union
Talk about Sunday, fun day. Sebastian Giovinco recorded the third-fastest hat trick in MLS history, netting three goals in just nine minutes. With the absence of U.S. Men’s National Team players Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore, the draw proved all the more impressive for Toronto, which now standasin a four-team tie for 24 points in the East.
4. Orlando City SC – 24 pts. | 2-0 loss vs. FC Dallas; this week: vs. New York Red Bulls
With its star player sitting out due to a one-game suspension, Orlando City stood Kaká-less and remained scoreless against an FC Dallas team that has allowed zero goals in its last three matches. City conjured up only five shots, none of them on target, while maintaining 52.9 percent possession.
5. Columbus Crew SC – 24 pts. | 3-0 loss at Montreal Impact; this week: at Chicago Fire, vs. Chicago Fire
Columbus Crew SC got off to a slow start at Toyota Park after conceding the winning goal in the fifth minute. Though more opportunities materialized in the second half, Montreal chose to pack it in defensively. With the loss, Crew SC is 6-7-6 on the season. Next, it will face the Chicago Fire twice within five days.
6. New England Revolution – 24 pts. | 4-1 loss at New York Red Bulls; this week: vs. New York City FC
A goal from midfielder Andy Dormna in the 37th minute proved to be the only shining light for New England, as the Revolution came out of New York disappointed, but still very much in the playoff hunt with 24 points in 21 matches.
7. Philadelphia Union – 22 pts. | 3-0 win vs. Portland Timbers FC; this week: at Toronto FC
The Philadelphia Union tallied three goals and held Portland, one of the League’s hottest teams, to four shots on goal. The win marked the Union’s first home victory over the Timbers in club history, having gone 0-3-2 in their five previous matchups.
8. Montreal Impact – 21 pts. | 3-0 win vs. Columbus Crew SC; this week: at Sporting Kansas City
The Impact scored two goals in the first eight minutes and tallied a third late in the second half. An attacking Montreal squad didn’t let Columbus’ backline settle in, as forward Dominic Oduro scored the game-winning goal just five minutes in and Marco Donadel added a screamer from distance just three minutes later. With the win, Montreal climbed into the Eastern Conference’s eighth spot.
9. New York City FC – 21 pts. | 4-4 draw vs. Toronto FC; this week: at New England Revolution
David Villa scored a brace while Patrick Mullins played the hero, netting a late equalizer for the home team in what was one of the League’s most entertaining matches of the season. With new teammate Frank Lampard still awaiting his first MLS cap, Villa proved he’s more than capable of leading this team into playoff contention. With four wins in their previous five matches, NYCFC stands in ninth place with 21 points.
10. Chicago Fire – 18 pts. | 1-0 win vs. Seattle Sounders FC; this week: vs. Columbus Crew SC, at Columbus Crew SC
An extra-time goal from substitute Jason Johnson gave the Chicago Fire the win over the Western Conference leaders. Chicago came away with 16 total shots while maintaining possession 50.8 percent of the time. The victory marks the fifth win of the season for the Fire, who sit in last place after 17 matches.
