COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC today announced that Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter, Crew SC players Adam Jahn and Niko Hansen, Acura NSX Manufacturing Large Project Leader Clement D’Souza and representatives from Crew SC Player Development are set to begin construction of a community garden outside of Linden Park Neighborhood Early Childhood Education Center in partnership with Columbus City Schools and Central Ohio nonprofit Local Matters. The event is set to take place on Wednesday, April 19 as part of MLS WORKS’ Greener Goals Initiative Week of Service.
The construction of the community garden is being overseen in part by Crew SC’s Give Forward program, which is sponsored by MAPFRE Insurance. The community garden will serve as the site for year-round educational programming by Local Matters and other partners to inspire individuals to engage with the food they grow and understand its impact on their health. Together, Crew SC, Acura and Local Matters look for the garden to increase food security and be a catalyst for long-term neighborhood sustainability.
In addition to the construction of a community garden with materials provided by Local Matters, the event will feature a free soccer clinic led by Crew SC Player Development staff members for children of the neighborhood at the Linden Park Futsal Court. Crew SC players will also participate in the soccer clinic. The event is slated to go until 4:00 p.m. ET.
Free parking is available for all attendees at Linden Park.
The project is scheduled to be finished by staff volunteers from Columbus Crew SC the following day on Thursday, April 20.
Columbus Crew SC next visits the New York Red Bulls on April 22 for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The Black & Gold return to MAPFRE Stadium on April 29 for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff against Andrea Pirlo, David Villa and New York City FC.
