The defending champs are putting the league on notice – again.
Saturday night’s 5-1 thrashing against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium can be summed up in a single word: dominance.
Not since 1996 have the Columbus Crew scored five goals in an away win, tying a Club all-time record set during the inaugural season. The Black & Gold also haven’t won this many road games in a season since 2004. We’re entering July.
Enjoy the ride, Crew supporters, because it seemingly keeps getting better.
On Saturday night, the visitors conceded first before scoring five-straight goals to earn a sixth league win in the last seven games.
Emmanuel Boateng scored after nine minutes, but Cucho Hernández equalized eight minutes later with an electric counter from the left flank. With the goal, Cucho has 10 goals in 13 MLS matches – and six in the last four games.
Max Arfsten needed a protractor for his game winner in the 42nd minute when he cut in from the left and sent a shot to the top-right corner. Arfsten has three goals and four assists in 15 games in his second season in Columbus.
The reigning league champs scored again five minutes later when Diego Rossi put the exclamation point on a trademarked Crew counter attack that ran circles around the New England backline.
The defenders then scored the goals in the second half, as Rudy Camacho produced his first Crew goal with a thumping header…
… and Steven Moreira added the fifth Columbus goal to finish off a third immaculate counter of the evening.
“I love that. This is really important for me,” head coach Wilfried Nancy said of five different players scoring. “This is something that is important because again, the idea to put doubt on the opposition. Once they do one thing, is it possible to have a solution? For me, the solution has to come from everyone. …Again, this is a dynamic movement. This is a collective movement.”
