Columbus Crew today announced that the Club has signed defender Mohamed Farsi (pronounced: mo-HAH-muhd FAR-see) from Columbus Crew 2 through the 2023 season with options for 2024 and 2025. Farsi, 22, is the second Crew 2 player to sign a contract with the First Team following the Crew’s signing of forward Jacen Russell-Rowe last month.
Farsi signed with Crew 2 on March 18 of this year and made his debut in the season opening match at Inter Miami CF II (March 26). Since then, the Canadian defender has made 14 regular-season appearances (all starts) while providing five assists – the second-most in MLS NEXT Pro action this season.
The 22-year-old has previously made two appearances for the Crew’s First Team while on short-term loan, coming in as a substitute in the Black & Gold’s matches against Charlotte FC (June 18) and Real Salt Lake (June 25).
“Mohamed quickly distinguished himself as one of the top performers for Crew 2 in MLS NEXT Pro and we have been impressed with his ability to contribute defensively and offensively,” said Columbus Crew President & General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Second teams are crucial to developing young talent and we’re already seeing the fruits of Crew 2 with the signings of first Jacen and now Mohamed. We know this wouldn’t be possible without the collaborative efforts of Caleb, Corey, Laurent and our staff to create opportunities for young players and want to commend them for their efforts.”
Prior to joining Crew 2, Farsi played for Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League from 2020-2021. The Canadian defender made 38 appearances for Calvary FC across all competitions, registering two goals and five assists. In 2020, he was recognized as the Best Under-21 Canadian Player of the Year at the Canadian Premier League Awards. Before his time with Cavalry FC, the midfielder spent the 2019 season with Algerian side AS Ain M’Lila.
“We are happy to see Mohamed rewarded for his hard work this season and pleased with the success that Crew 2 is having in its first year,” said Columbus Crew Assistant General Manager & Crew 2 General Manager Corey Wray. “The ability to have second team players receive minutes with the First Team is invaluable and allows us to see how they may perform at the First Team level. As our Club continues to grow, we hope to see other players take advantage of their chances and achieve their goal of joining the First Team.”
At the international level, Farsi has represented the Canada Under-23 Men’s National Team, earning two caps during the 2021 Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Championship. He has also earned two caps with the Canada Futsal National Team.
