COLUMBUS — Columbus Crew SC today announced that defender Jonathan Mensah has received an international call-up from the Ghana National Team. Mensah is among those named to the Black Stars’ roster for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Egypt from June 21 – July 19.
Ghana is in Group F of the Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Benin, Cameroon and Guinea-Bissau. The Black Stars kick-off the tournament against Benin (June 25), before facing Cameroon (June 29) and later Guinea-Bissau to finish out the group stage. The top two teams of each group – along with the best four third-placed teams – are set to advance to the Round of 16 stage of the tournament.
Mensah has earned 57 caps with the Ghana National Team. He made his debut with the Black Stars in 2010, making a substitute appearance in a friendly match against Bosnia-Herzegovina (March 3). Mensah’s most recent appearance for Ghana came last year in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Ethiopia (November 18). In 2019, Mensah has made 14 regular-season appearances (all starts) for Crew SC, helping the Club post five shutouts.
Crew SC’s current roster features eight players that have received a senior National Team call-up: David Accam, Harrison Afful, Waylon Francis, David Guzman, Jonathan Mensah, Zack Steffen, Wil Trapp and Gyasi Zardes.
Up next for Crew SC, the Club hosts the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at MAPFRE Stadium for a 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round match on Tuesday, June 11 [7:00 p.m. ET / ESPN+ (Stream)].
